By using local animal power to construct the reservoirs, international support can pump a dramatic economic stimulus into farm communities while preparing them to weather the greenhouse effects that global industrialization seems to be causing. Wed, 11 Nov 2009 12:36:13 EST WaggonerPyleMeyer Pineapples Business Plan http://arc.peacecorpsconnect.org/view/1194/pineapples-business-plan I was brought up in a rural area in Kilimanjaro region where the major source of livelihood is small holder agriculture. The income is both unreliable and unsustainable leading to great hardship for the community. Due to this experience I have developed a passion in adoption of appropriate farming technology to arrest the situation. Nearly two years of intensive research on a farm near Dar es Salaam has shown that large scale organic pineapple farming and a canning factory are feasible. Pineapple is the one of very few crops that can be planted, and harvested, throughout the year. This would mean no off-season for workers and a constant cash flow within a short period after the first planting. Our vision for the future is to be the customer's first and best choice in the organic farm products and services we provide. We will to be the leader in the farm organic pineapple industry and we will become a leader in the farming products arena. Our customers' needs will determine our path. Our values will guide us. Organic pineapple farming is an approach to agriculture where the aim is to create integrated, humane, environmentally and economically sustainable agricultural production systems. Maximum reliance will be placed on locally or farm-derived renewable resources and the management of self-regulating ecological and biological processes and interactions in order to provide acceptable levels of crop, and human nutrition, protection from pests and diseases, and an appropriate return to the human and other resources employed. Reliance on external inputs, whether chemical or organic, will be reduced as far as possible. It is a secular non denominational school that has so far achieved the following: • It has given opportunity to about 100 students that would otherwise not have accessed secondary school education. • It has attracted Donors to sponsor so far about 50 poor and orphaned children that would otherwise not have accessed education at all. • Involved in repair and improvement of local community access roads that flood during rainy seasons. • Worked with International Volunteers to promote sporting skills and talents among students. • Organized Students’ and Teachers’ holiday camp quests when students acquire a lot of practical, social and citizenship life skills. b) Objectives i) To promote Agro forestry through fruit tree growing for the benefit of students, their family members and the community at large. ii) To promote the economical, nutritional, health and environmental needs of the community at large. iii) To promote commercial fruit tree growing, fruit production, processing and marketing. c) Methods i) To use the school not only as a centre of formal education but also for informal agricultural, health, nutritional, environmental and business education for the community. Students will be trained to acquire informal community and development skills during school holidays and few selected weekends. ii) Exhibition and demonstration community days will be organized for students to pass on their skills to their family members and other community members. iii) Visitation days will be organized for the students to make study tours on commercial fruit farms, processing factories and fruit markets and distribution agencies. iv) Each family that is involved in the project will allocate some land specifically for fruit tree growing. v) This project will provide knowledge, skills, field visits, seeds, fertilizers and other farm inputs. vi) Each project farm will be owned by a student with cooperation with family members. vii) The project will promote a specific uniform perennial fruit such as mango or avocado. These crops have a very big market in Uganda. Unfortunately they are grown at a very small and insignificant scale. The school community soils are very good for agro-forestry. viii) Training sessions will be organized in collaboration with Government’s Agriculture departments and other stake holders. D) Anticipated Results i) Each Student’s economical, health and nutritional future is secured and insured with 100 fruit trees. ii) The community’s environmental concerns are improved with 100x100 fruit trees. iii) The community becomes able to produce an average of 4,000,000 fruits during each year for decades (Each tree is estimated to produce 200 fruits per season x 02 seasons each year.) iv) Improvement in agricultural and environmental skills for the community. v) Students that have learnt the skills and ideas of job creation early in their life. vi) A new cooperative society formed for fruit growers. E) Uniqueness of the approach i) Students get involved in local community, social, economical and environmental issues. ii) Integration of a formal secondary school with the community to promote job creation for the students and the local community. iii) Passing on development skills from the school to students who pass them on to their family members. iv) Students getting guarantees on their economic future when still in school. v) Establishing the first cooperative society of student farmers in Uganda. vi) Developing a project that integrates economical, social and environmental concerns of a community. N.B. Most schools in Uganda are like ‘islands’. They are mere conduits of education that is not relevant to the community. Wed, 11 Nov 2009 09:37:47 EST linxkey Innovative Marketing of Traditional Vegetables in Urban Markets to Improve Rural Livelihoods in Kenya http://arc.peacecorpsconnect.org/view/1191/innovative-marketing-of-traditional-vegetables-in-urban-markets-to-improve-rural-livelihoods-in-kenya Summary The consumption of traditional of vegetables in urban areas has been overtaken by exotic varieties which have traditionally not been produced by small-scale farmers in rural areas of Kenya. Urbanization has led to substitution of these vegetable with exotic ones that are largely supplied by middle-large scale farmers. This project seeks to develop new market outlets and strategies that will lead to an increase in production, processing and consumption of traditional green vegetables that are produced by largely female small scale farmers in Kenya. The project will establish rural-based pilot production, processing and marketing activities to deliver and test the viability and demand for pre-processed traditional leafy vegetables by upmarket restaurants and hotels. Collaborating NGOs and CBOs will mobilize farmers and identify farms to participate in the project. Finally marketing associations will be assisted to be independent and continue activities after the project on commercial basis. The project will market pre-cut and dried vegetables and collaborate with restaurants to fuse them into international cuisines. Solar drying of vegetables using operated equipment will be utilized. In order to support the marketing of the vegetables, demonstration and promotional booths will be set up at various supermarkets and restaurants in selected urban centres in Kenya. These activities will be accompanied with market, retailer and consumer surveys. To raise the profile of the marketing effort and extend information on value-addition to a national audience, a high profile launch of the test-marketing will be conducted. The ministers of health, agriculture and trade will be invited to launch the test-marketing. Television features will also be prepared and broadcast in most of national television channels. The project will create new opportunities for income generation by producers and better nutrition for consumers. Organizing farmers into marketing associations will realize economies of scale for the farmers resulting in improved farm incomes. The supply of pre-cut and dried green vegetables may lead to new marketing channels and opportunities for producers and middlemen. The added advantage that the dried vegetables can be transported for long distances means that farmers in the rural areas can target distant urban markets especially Kenyan cities and towns. Expanded markets will increase production resulting in higher incomes for farmers. Consumers on the other hand, will have improved access to highly nutritious and mineral rich vegetables that are quick to prepare. Traditional vegetable production has largely been a preserve of female farmers in most of rural Kenya. By enhancing opportunities for income generation, this will greatly improve their access to cash income and their welfare. Wed, 11 Nov 2009 04:24:13 EST Jabir Ending Famine in Africa with Clean Affordable and Renewable Energy Technologies http://arc.peacecorpsconnect.org/view/1187/ending-famine-in-africa-with-clean-affordable-and-renewable-energy-technologies The problem of recurring famine in Africa goes deeper than the often touted reason of lack of water to help grow food or for animal use. The water levels available in most African countries are enough to sustain a hunger-free nation. In some parts of Cameroon, people suffer famine despite that country having the distinction of being home to the wettest climate on earth. Examples abound of how others have managed to overcome. Despite the scarcity of water in semi-desert and arid lands of North Africa, the Arab World, the Mediterranean countries and part of the South East Asia, farmers there enjoy better food security, compare to Sub Saharan Africa. This is not because their economies are better off to enable them to easily pump water for irrigation. Long before the discovery of fossil fuel, most of these countries already enjoyed food security. In fact, in order to cope with the harsh climatic conditions with little rains, inhabitant of these dry lands developed traditional knowledge of water lifting techniques to exploit streams, rivers and underground water for irrigation to increase food production. As a result, farmers are able to harness available water to grow crops and harvest up to three times a year. In this process, all available forms of energy are put into use, such as human power, animal power, water power and wind power, to lift water for irrigation. Wed, 11 Nov 2009 04:04:38 EST ACREST
