Mini-Abattoirs/ Slaughter Houses in ASAL Constituencies in Kenya
Small scale livestock farmers in Kajiado district face perennial livestock losses during drought and this has increased the number of people facing extreame poverty and hunger. This proposal offers a longterm solution through the strengthening of marketing channels, value addition of livestock products, creation of supply chain outlets for meat, and the creation of co-operative groups for collective bargaining by farmers. The objective of this idea is to reduce poverty among the pastoral community through improved income from livestock sales, employment creation through sustainable value addition of livestock and livestock products. The method to be applied to achieve the above ojective is through the establishment of modern slaughter houses in the group ranches, branding and packaging the products to show their origin and development of supply and retail outlets of meat and leather products in all major towns in Kenya . The anticipated results are reduced poverty by approximately 40% in 3 years, reduce livestock losses due to drought by approximately 60% in 5 years and reduce unemployment by 18% in two years. The proposed approach is unique in that it is community based social enterprise. View
