Introduction of Permaculture to Schools and Communities in Southern Ethiopia

SUMMARY Konso is an area in Southern Ethiopia which is prone to food insecurity and has been suffering drought the past two consecutive years. Permaculture (PC) is a design system for integrated and sustainable management of ecological resources, which allows communities to effectively manage their land and produce for their needs while benefiting the function of the ecological systems which support them, rather than degrading them. The 72h Permaculture Design Course (PDC), the standard comprehensive introduction to PC, equips a person with all necessary skills to begin practicing Permaculture Design, and includes theory, practical and participatory group design exercises. In this project we propose to introduce Permaculture into a number of schools in the Konso area by (1) giving the 72h PDC to 2 teachers per school and producing designs for management of the school grounds during the group design exercises (2) implementing Permaculture in the school compounds through community mobilisation (of parents and children), according to the designs produced by the teachers (3) following up on implementation with the monitoring and evaluation programs outlined below.  View

Schools for Salone Builds Schools and Wells in Sierra Leone

Schools for Salone partners with communities to construct schools and improve education in Sierra Leone. We are an organization of Sierra Leone Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, Americans of Sierra Leonean descent, Sierra Leoneans and others who believe that education is the hope for the future and that self-initiated solutions are the most effective. We strive to raise awareness in the US of the huge need for rebuilding the education infrastructure in Sierra Leone after its recent 10 year long civil war and to raise funds to help build schools and support teachers and students in Sierra Leone. We work closely with organizations in the US and Sierra Leone who share our goals and with rural Sierra Leonean villages who have demonstrated a commitment to education and have donated land, materials and labor to build a school. There is so much need and our resources are small. We need help to grow. Learn more about us at www.SchoolsForSalone.org  View
