Interactive Person-to-Person Child Sponsorship Website

My idea is based on the problem being faced by a children's home I have spent time volunteering at in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa regarding their child sponsorship program. They do not have the capacity to manage their sponsorship program completely on their own due to lack of funding (they now rely on a variety of outside help) and they have shown desire to automate the process with a child sponsorship website.

The way I want to make this different is by making the most comprehensive website possible. This would involve not only creating a direct person-to-person eCommerce site (much like the way Kiva.org has created a lender-to-borrower direct eCommerce site) but also a site for communication between the donor and their sponsored child.

To describe in more literal terms, it would be a website dedicated to child sponsorship where each child had a profile, had a list of what they needed to be paid for by a sponsor, a direct (online) way for money to be donated to that child and would also allow the ability for the donor, upon sponsorship, to communicate directly with the child.

I personally am interested in more innovative and sustainable projects for poverty alleviation, however, there is an undeniable need to keep these children alive. There is too much wasted time, energy, and money involved in the child sponsorship program at this particular childrens' home (and other childrens' homes I am sure) and a more automated and efficient method would save money and promise the continuation and likely the expansion of a necessary program.

While I lack a certain expertise of information systems, I would hope to gain some feedback from this forum of ways in which to make this project a reality.
