Moringa Oleifera Project for School Children in Kenya

Over the years, Kenya forest cover continue to decrease due human pressure resulting to the country remaining with only 1.7% of the forest cover, this has led to Save Mount Kenya Forest from Extinction Group being formed to team up with the other organizations to address the issue of deforestation and find a sustainable solutions of saving our Kenyan forest cover.  

Group Activities:

• Reforestation programs through nursery establishment,management and transplanting of these trees to the forest.
• Agroforestry technologies trainings which have been aimed at equipping communities and especially farmers with knowledge of increasing food crops production through use of modern methods of farming and integrating food crops with trees which will control erosion, fix nitrogen in the soil and provide green manure.
• Protecting water catchment areas through planting trees along river banks and streams which recharge ground water level and protect siltation of eroded soils thus increase in water volume.
• Environmental conservation awareness which include, involving community members in the work of conservation through formation of forest community policing and thus able to monitor and report any illegal activities happening inside the forest and report to any necessary authority.

Save Mount Kenya Forest from Extinction group is launching a project with schools which will see the start of moringa oleifera nurseries to provide school children within Embu and Meru with moringa oleifera seedlings to plant in their farms and schools.

Uses of Moringa Oleifera:

• Curing of over 300 diseases ranging from boils, sprains, colds, conjunctivis, abdominal discomfort, hysteria, skin rashes, toothaches, rheumatism, aching feet and relapsing fever
• Water treatment from crushed seeds
• Meeting nutritional needs because it contains all essentials amino acids and vitamins
• Combat malnutrition especially among infants and nursing mothers

The project is intended to achieve the following for these school going children:

• Boost their immune system against diseases
• Treat their drinking waters for their domestic use
• Enhance their nutrition value: moringa oleifera leaves, flowers and pods are full of nutrients and vitamins which are good for diseases prevention
•  Combat malnutrition among school going children.

Project implementation:

• Buying seeds from certified seeds merchant like Kenya Forest Seeds Centre
• Establishing nurseries to raise seedlings which in return will be planted in school and others shared among school going children to plant in their farms.
• More than 20 schools in two districts will be involved with this project.
• Transportation of seedlings from nurseries to schools from where they will be shared among school children and others planted in their school.

Budget:

For the group to be able to implement the project, we will require funds to purchase moringa oleifera seeds, establish over 5 nurseries to raise and cater these seedlings, transport these moringa seedlings to schools to share among school going children and other plant in school compound for their school feeding programs.
