Earth Box for Homes

SUMMARY

Conserve water and provide nutrition

ESTIMATED COST: $0

A few months ago at a conference for science teachers, I was introduced to a product called the Earth Box.  It is a plastic box which is used as a planter.  The great thing about it is that there is a screen on the bottom which keeps the dirt from resting on the floor of the planter and a pvc type tube in one corner.  When the plants are watered, the water pools at the bottom of the planter and the plants take it up from the bottom.  This helps to conserve water.  Also, when seeds are first planted, they are covered by black plastic which prevents evaporation even further.  This seemed like a great idea to me and the design is simple and can be constructed easily with just a few supplies if it cannot be purchased from the Earth Box company.  My idea is to give planters to families so they can have fresh produce in their home and conserve water while growing them.
