Small scale livestock farmers in Kajiado district face perennial livestock losses during drought and this has increased the number of people facing extreame poverty and hunger. This proposal offers a longterm solution through the strengthening of marketing channels, value addition of livestock products, creation of supply chain outlets for meat, and the creation of co-operative groups for collective bargaining by farmers. The objective of this idea is to reduce poverty among the pastoral community through improved income from livestock sales, employment creation through sustainable value addition of livestock and livestock products. The method to be applied to achieve the above ojective is through the establishment of modern slaughter houses in the group ranches, branding and packaging the products to show their origin and development of supply and retail outlets of meat and leather products in all major towns in Kenya .The anticipated results are reduced poverty by approximately 40% in 3 years, reduce livestock losses due to drought by approximately 60% in 5 years and reduce unemployment by 18% in two years. The proposed approach is unique in that it is community based social enterprise.
Kajiado district is classified as an arid and semi-arid area experiencing an average of 24 degrees celcious and receives rainfall twice a year with peaks in march-april (long rains ) and october -december (short rains). Required resources- technical expertise in meat handling, land for the construction of the slaughter houses, construction materials, veterinary services, pasture preservation techniques, and rain water harvesting expertise
The structure of the livestock sector in Kenya is 90 percent small holder/pastoralists owned and hence offers a key opportunity to impact on poverty alleviation. Current production systems are predominately traditional pastoralists (substantially for subsistence and not economically driven) or a mix of the two which means there is opportunity and space to enhance the productivity of the sector and thereby expand current income levels. Currently, annual average incomes from livestock stand at 100 to 200 US dollar (small stock-cattle). These could grow by 10 percent if inefficiencies in production and marketing are overcome
Plan and execution-
the limitations to be faced are lack of a well regulated marketing channels, lack of technical expertise at the local level in value addition. This proposal is targeting small scale farmers, the youth and women in employment opportunities. Results will be achieved by establishing and strengthening marketing channels, improving livestock quality, introduction of veterinary services at the rural areas, pasture preservation during rainy season and water harvesting. Political support will be achieved by involving all the opinion leaders in the planning, and execution of project.
